Understanding accessibility

Accessibility consists in providing access to information contained in a web page independently of physical limitations (visual disability, hearing or motor functions) or technological ones (slow connections, antiquated navigators, sluggish screens, etc) or of the environment of the users.

Aim

At present, there are millions of people who suffer from some kind of deficiency which makes it difficult for them to access web pages with ease. Therefore, in the construction of our web page, we have tried to facilitate the reduction of barriers in an efficient manner and to design a web page that can be accessible to the greatest possible number of users.

With this aim in mind, we have followed the Accessibility Directives established by the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiatives) and we have applied the standard formats recommended by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

Verification points

In line with this undertaking, the following are among the main points adopted:

1. Navigation

An effort has been made to provide a logical and intuitive navigation in all parts of the web site, by applying the same structure for all the pages:

• The main navigation bar with links to the principal sections of the web site.
• A central zone which shows a route to indicate to the user at all times in which section or sub-section information is found on them.

2. Keyboard shortcuts

The keyboard shortcuts or access-keys are keyboard combinations which allow direct access to the content without the need to use the mouse.

The means of activating the keyboard short-cuts depends on the operating system and the navigator. The most frequent are as follows:

• In Windows systems, with Internet Explorer navigators, the sequence ALT+ ACCESSKEY+ ENTER should be typed in
• In the Windows System, with navigators of the Mozilla family, sequence is ALT + ACCESSKEY
• In Windows systems, with Firefox 2.0: ALT+SHIFT + ACCESSKEY
• In the MAC systems, the sequence is : CTRL + ACCESSKEY

Note: Netscape 4, Camino, Galeon, Konqueror, Omniweb, Safari (versions below 1.2), Opera Windows/Linux (versions below 7.0) do not support the keyboard shortcuts.

3. Links

The links which require it contain a description by means of the attribute "title", indicating the destiny link in a clear manner.

In addition, an effort has been made, in so far as it is possible, to avoid the presence of links functioning with JavaScript.

4. Visual design

This web site uses screensaver sheets (CSS) to present the information, facilitating their access and correct visualization in different backgrounds.

5. Images

All the images contain a short description, by way of "alt", "longdesc" or "title".

Those images which are only used as a decorative element have blank descriptive texts.

6. Typography

Lettering has been used which may be configured by the user in order to facilitate the reading of the contents of the web site.

To increase or decrease the lettering size, just take the following steps:

• In most navigators, access the "View" menu.
• Select "Text Size".
• Click on the desired option.

Accessibility levels

All the pages have been validated as XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 1.0 and accessibility has been analyzed with the TAW tool, where the level achieved is double-A (AA) and triple-A (AAA) in some standard models.

We have checked the correct visualization of this web site in different versions of the main navigators (Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher, Mozilla, Opera).
